Breakfast jump-starts your metabolism, helps you burn calories throughout the day, and It gives you the energy you need to get things done. Breakfast helps you focus at work or at school. Research studies have proven that eating breakfast leads to better health, it improves your memory and concentration, lower levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol, and lowers your chances of getting diabetes, heart disease, and being overweight. Breakfast eaters tend to have better diets overall, consuming more fruit, vegetables, milk, and whole grains than non-breakfast eaters.
Let’s face it, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but sometimes it just doesn’t fit into your busy schedule. It is so easy to grab a quick bowl of sugary cereal or even forget breakfast altogether. Some days you just survive on cups of coffee or Red Bull for energy. Prevent that “crash and crave” roller coaster! If you begin your morning with caffeinated coffee and sugar, you will crash, overeat, and be too tired to make it through your day! Or you’ll reach for caffeine to get through just a few more hours and that will mess up your sleep at night. Don’t just survive… Don’t you want to thrive and feel great throughout the day?
How you begin the day will determine how the rest of the day goes. Do you want to feel energized or do you want to skip breakfast drag throughout your day with a lack of energy? Also, what you eat in the morning is directly related to how you feel. So if you are in the habit of skipping breakfast or if you’re a grab-the-coffee-and-donut-in-the-morning kind of person, then I’ve got some solutions for you.
Smoothies are a quick alternative to a fast breakfast that can help energize you throughout the entire day. When you toss in some greens, a little fruit, a healthy natural protein powder, and a healthy liquid like coconut water, you are bound to feel energetic and ready to take on the day. Starting the day with a smoothie also gives you well needed antioxidants which help protect our bodies from free radicals, and it is a great low glycemic start. Eating a low glycemic breakfast will help curb your sugar cravings for the entire day and it will also help with not crashing.
Here is one of my favorite smoothie recipes:
1 Scoop Chocolate Vegan Shakeology
1 Cup Unsweetened Almond Milk
1 Cup Kale
1 Cup Mixed Frozen Berries
1/2 Teaspoon Real Vanilla Extract
A Dash Cinnamon (optional)
Mix all ingredients in a high speed blender and enjoy.
Another great smoothie recipe is this Cinnamon Roll Shakeology recipe. If you are craving fluffy, cinnamon rolls slathered in icing this recipe pulls the best flavors from this sweet breakfast and transforms it into a healthy Shakeology drink. It does have coffee in it, so as much as it might taste like a dessert, it’s totally acceptable to have for breakfast:
1 Scoop Chocolate or Vanilla Shakeology
1 Cup Brewed Chilled Coffee (don’t heat Shakeology it ruins the nutrients)
1/2 Cup Unsweetened Almond Milk
1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
1 Cup Ice Cubes
Place coffee, milk, Shakeology, cinnamon, and ice in blender; cover. Blend until smooth.
If you don’t have time to make a smoothie in the morning here is a perfect grab and go recipe:
1 Scoop Chocolate Vegan Shakeology (or the flavor of your choice)
8 Ounces Almond Milk
4 Ounces Cold Water
3 Ice Cubes
1 Tablespoon Powdered Peanut Butter (optional)
Pour almond milk in a Shaker/Blender cup. Add Shakeology and Powdered Peanut Butter. Top with cold water and ice. Close the lid, shake, and go! You can even make this the night before and leave it in the fridge.
Another fantastic grab and go breakfast is chia pudding. Chia seeds are packed with omegas, fiber, potassium, and magnesium. These superfood seeds are great for boosting energy and endurance. Chia seeds also help to regulate digestion. Here is one of my favorite chia seed pudding recipes:
1 Scoop Tropical Strawberry Vegan Shakeology
1 Cup Plain Greek Yogurt
1 Cup Mixed Berries
1/4 Cup Almond Milk
1 Heaping Tablespoon Chia Seeds
Mix all ingredients together, separate into 2 bowls, and let set in the refrigerator overnight. This recipe makes 2 servings.
