If you love animals, like I do, you know the wonderfully calming effect your pet can have on your mood. It feels so good when your pet looks at you with love in their eyes, cuddles with you, or even just rubs up on you. I love the way my cats greet me when I get home and I enjoy watching their silly behavior.

In studies it has been proven that owning a pet can lower blood pressure better than medication. Even just petting an animal can reduce stress. So the next time you feel stressed, really spend some time with your pet and notice the wonderful effects.

But what if you don’t have the space or resources to care for a furry friend? Here are few ways to enjoy the health benefits of animals.

Watching fishes has also been proven effective in reducing stress. You don’t even have to have a real aquarium. Fishes swimming on the computer screen or TV also have the same calming effect.

Bird watching is a great way to reduce stress. A small bird feeder outside the window draws little flocks that both amuse and calm. Hummingbird feeders are really fun. You can also find screen versions of birds flying and feeding on the internet or TV. 

A great way to enjoy the calming effect of animals is to visit a pet shop. You can enjoy the fishes swimming, rodents running in wheels, cute little puppies and kitties, and even the reptiles can help you relax. Just look at the animals you like and avoid those you don’t. 

A friend, who could not have pets in her apartment, volunteered for the Humane Society. Her job there was to pet and play with the cats. This not only helped with her stress and depression but it also helped the animals.
