Most of you assume that the products that you use go through rigorous testing before hitting the market. Did you know that the government doesn’t require cosmetic companies to do health studies or to test the chemicals that they put into your personal care products? Ouch! These companies can pretty much use anything, even if it is a substance that is dangerous to your health.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it is permeable. Did you know that the body absorbs 60 percent of what we apply to our skin? Yep that’s right — so what you put on your skin, your body absorbs. And guess where it’s going? Straight into your blood stream!

To make matters worse many of the substances used in everyday skin care products contain synthetic chemicals that are skin irritants, endocrine disrupters, toxic, and carcinogenic. So what can you do to protect yourself?

Common chemicals to avoid that are frequently found in personal care products:

FD&C color pigments are made from coal tar and almost all of them are carcinogenic. Many of these pigments cause skin sensitivity and irritation, or even oxygen depletion in the blood.

Formaldehydes are used as a preservatives in many cosmetics. This chemical has long been know to be a carcinogenic. It also causes allergic reactions and is harmful to the immune system.

Isopropyl Alcohol destroys your intestinal flora which makes your body susceptible to diseases, parasites, and cancer. Other side effects of this chemical are headaches, dizziness, depression, nausea, and vomiting.

Parabens have estrogen like qualities and are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. This chemical has even been found in biopsy samples from breast cancer tumors.

Phthalates are endocrine disrupters and reproductive toxicants. Shown to increase the risk of breast cancer, these chemicals lead to a higher rate of birth defects.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate leads to kidney and respiratory damage and when combined with other chemicals forms a carcinogen. It also irritates the skin, lungs, and eyes.

Toluene is a petrochemical that causes respiratory damage and compromises your immune system. It can also harm the development of babies in the womb.

Talc has been linked to ovarian and testicular cancer.

These are just a few of the toxic chemicals that are found in your personal care products. Even if they are labeled natural they still  often contain dangerous synthetic chemicals and is no guarantee that they are safe. So what else can you do to protect yourself.

  1. Read labels like a fiend! Avoid products that don’t list their ingredients, that have chemicals you don’t recognize, or chemicals that are listed as dangerous or absent EWG’s guide.
  2. Look up your products and their chemicals using EWG Skin Deep Cosmetic Database. The Environmental Working Group lists 69,000 products and 1000’s of chemicals. EWG rates their safety. All you have to do is go to this link and type the product or ingredients into the search box: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/myths-on-cosmetics-safety/
  3. Use products from companies that you trust. Companies that are open about their ingredients and their manufacturing processes. For example, I have been using the same soap for years. It is made by one of my friends and she uses all natural, healthy ingredients.
  4. Make your own personal care products. I make a lot of what I use. For example, you can make your own deodorant from equal parts of organic cold pressed coconut oil, baking soda, and arrow root powder. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil and you’re good to go. My daughter uses coconut oil to remove make up and I use it as a nighttime moisturizer.

So there are ways to keep yourself safer from the barrage of chemicals that are contained in modern personal care products. You just have to do a little research.
