Don’t you just absolutely love summer! The warm air, the long days, and the plentiful variety of local fruits and vegetables. Summer season is smoothie season!
Smoothies are quick, nutritious meals, easy to make, and best of all no cooking. They are especially great if your need something healthy to eat on the go. Good smoothies are filled mostly with veggies, are nutrient dense, have a little fat, and are made with ‘real’ natural ingredients. There are many benefits in including smoothies into your diet. Here are just a few.
A fabulous way to get your fruits and veggies.
Get your daily allowance of fruits and vegetables it one shot. Drinking smoothies is a great way to get enough fruits and vegetables into your diet. My daughter hates vegetables. In smoothies the taste of the vegetables is hidden. That is how I get her to eat enough or them in smoothies. Also adding a lot of greens to your smoothies balances out the sugar from the fruit and is metabolized better.
You can enrich your smoothies with just about any healthy ingredient. Try herbs and spices, plant protein powers, extremely nutritious superfoods like spirulina or chlorella, and healthy oils like coconut or flaxseed. Pretty much any health food can be used to add nutrition and favor to your drink.
Easy for your body to digest.
How many times have you heard to chew your food more that it aids in digestion? Smoothies are easy to digest because the blender does the chewing for you, which leads to optimal nutrient assimilation. In other words the nutrients go right to where they are needed in your body. There is also the the side benefit of getting more fiber into your diet and better bowel function.
Great if your on a detox.
You are exposed to so many environmental toxins. You can find them in your food, in your cleaning supplies, in your personal care products, everything from pesticides, to BPA, to Xenoestrogens, to GMO, and the list goes on and on. I always recommend a seasonal detox to my clients and smoothies are a big part. It’s easy to add detoxifying ingredients, like dandelion, kale, or avocados into your smoothie to help cleanse the body of toxins. Also the increase in fiber also has a detoxifying effect.
An essential beauty routine.
Another amazing benefit of eating smoothies is that it improves the appearance of your skin, hair, nails…just about everything. Smoothies are jam packed with extra vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that will make you glow. Also, if proportioned correctly (i.e., more vegetables than fruit, no added sweetener, a little good fat, some plant based protein), smoothies can replace heavy meals with a nutritious alternative. Often leading to maintaining a healthy weight. Smoothies just make you beautiful. Here is one of my favorite smoothie recipes that also doubles as a facial and body mask!
Glowing Skin Smoothie Mask
1/2 of an avocado
3 tablespoons of plain greek yogurt (full fat) yogurt
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
1/4 of a cup of honey
Blend all ingredients until smooth. Scoop it into a little bowl then make your meal smoothie. You can even do it in the same blender because all the facial ingredients is food.
Yummy Berry Smoothie Drink
1/2 of an avocado
8 oz of plain greek yogurt (or if you are sensitive to dairy, 8 ounces of plain coconut yogurt or some type of nut milk will do).
1 cup of berries
1 cup of greens (kale and spinach are my favorite).
1 handful of ice or use frozen berries
1 dash of cinnamon
Stevia or honey to taste optional
Blend all ingredients until smooth. Pour into a glass. Then take the glass and the bowl of smoothie into the bathroom. Get naked and smear the ‘Glowing Skin Smoothie’ all over your face and body. I like to sit on the edge of the tub because I am all gooey with smoothie and sip my ‘Yummy Berry Smoothie’, but you can stand if you prefer. Leave the ‘Glowing Skin Smoothie’ on your body for at least 15 minutes. Finish your delicious smoothie meal then jump into the shower and wash it off. You will be amazed at how soft your skin feels after this treatment. It makes your skin glow!
